Synopsis ~

Moving to a space station at the edge of the galaxy was always going to be the death of Hanna’s social life. Nobody said it might actually get her killed.

The sci-fi saga that began with the breakout bestseller Illuminae continues on board the Jump Station Heimdall, where two new characters will confront the next wave of the BeiTech assault.

Hanna is the station captain’s pampered daughter; Nik the reluctant member of a notorious crime family. But while the pair are struggling with the realities of life aboard the galaxy’s most boring space station, little do they know that Kady Grant and the Hypatia are headed right toward Heimdall, carrying news of the Kerenza invasion.

When an elite BeiTech strike team invades the station, Hanna and Nik are thrown together to defend their home. But alien predators are picking off the station residents one by one, and a malfunction in the station’s wormhole means the space-time continuum might be ripped in two before dinner. Soon Hanna and Nik aren’t just fighting for their own survival; the fate of everyone on the Hypatia—and possibly the known universe—is in their hands.

But relax. They’ve totally got this. They hope.

Thoughts ~

OH MY GOD! This book was as good, if not better than the first. I can name on one hand which series have a better second than first (Dance of Thieves, SJTR, The Knife of Never Letting Go, The Dark Artifices), but this is one of them. Again, it took a little bit (I'd say around 80 pages) for me to get into it, but gosh, once it started getting good, it stayed good!

This book follows Hanna and Nik who live on the Heimdall Jump Station. When the station gets taken over by murdering Bei-Tech soldiers, Hanna and Nik, who really annoy each other, have to work together to take them down.

Let me just say, Hanna and Nik are so cute and I live for the teamwork. This book was similar to the first one in format but totally different in character development and motivations. Where in the first one, Kady wants to fight and live to tell the story, here we have Hanna and Nik just wanting to figure out what the heck is going on and stop them from taking over their home. Anyway, the characters are great, the plot line's great, and the gore and thrill are still there and I live for it!

This is not a standalone, it is the second book and occurs right after Illuminae, even though the Illuminae characters don't know what's going on. The books are connected though! And yes, Kady and Ezra may make an appearance!!

Also, guys, I didn't even know this until now, but MARIE LU illustrated this book. Isn't that crazy ahhh!

Things I Loved ~

-The goreeeee, I love a good bloody book (don't worry, it's not that bad I'm just overreacting)

-Hanna Donnelly, the queen herself. I really didn't like her for the first half, but the second she started fighting and absolutely obliterating everyone, I had no choice but to stan her 😍

-NIKLAS MALIKOV, my sweet, sarcastic, hot as hell boy with fricken neck tattoos 💕💕

-The absolute best badass of the series, Ella Malikova(and her fish, obviously)

-THE PLOT TWISTIES AND TURNIES

-Seeing my babies from Illuminae

-Literally everything, guys it's so good, read the series!!

Things I Didn't Love ~

-I can't think of anything

-I guess it was a little slow at the beginning, but again, once it gets going, it really gets going

-It can also get pretty confusing at the  climax/end of the book, but if you just kind of roll with it, you will understand easier than trying to solve it

Characters ~

-Hanna Donnelly

"And now, born from the ashes, she's a warrior in bloodied black."

Goddamn, this woman right here is one of my favorites. If I could be any person in this book, I'd want to be Hanna. Although I didn't like her at the beginning of the book, when she was a preppy princess with her perfect little boyfriend, she quickly became a living legend, and I love her for it. I don't think my opinion has ever changed that fast for a character. Anyway, I love how between her and Nik (who went to prison for murder, mind you), Hanna would 100 percent be the one to blow something up and never look back.

-Niklas "Nik" Malikov

“I cannot help but wonder if his desire to see this place ripped to pieces pales in comparison to his desire to see her again.

Man oh man oh man. This boy right here makes me feel some type of way. Nik really is seen as a guy you shouldn't trust, and the guy you definitely shouldn't be friends with. He's been to prison, he has the tattoo of murder around his neck, and he's the infamous drug dealer on the ship. He really doesn't sound like the type of guy you should be fighting bad guys with. But, of course, that's not really him. He is the sweetest little man who puked the first time he shot someone. I cannot say it enough, I love this man so much.

-Ella Malikova

"Patience and Silence had one beautiful daughter. And her name was Vengeance."

Ella was such a fun character to meet because she is like the female version of Nik, and I love it. I think she is extremely underrated, not only for her personality and character but for how much she does for the story and how important she is to the other characters. I mean, come on, without her, they would all easily be dead. She really sits at her computer the whole time and hacks, and yet she is so powerful and could easily control everything. (Kinda spoilers) One of the biggest shocks to me was finding out about her sickness, and yet her disabilities are introduced so casually that you really cannot think any less of her, and I love the authors for that. They show how fricken amazing a character can be, no matter what they've gone through, and they don't need to be a pity case, but rather an example of strength.

Quotes ~

"'You might get only one shot. So shoot. You know who said that?' The rifle clatters to the bloody floor. 'Hanna FUCKING Donnelly. That's who.'"

"And blood and tears and screams did not matter anymore, because at least they are together."

“I'm not going to sit here and spitball about hyperspatial reality theory with a psychopathic calculator. This conversation is over.

"Just like he promised. A whole sky of different stars."

"It may comfort you to know that your death, while astonishingly violent, will likely be mercifully swift."

Do I Recommend?

Yessssssssss, read the whole series! It will blow your mind!
