Illuminae // Amie Kaufman & Jay Kristoff
Illuminae // Amie Kaufman & Jay Kristoff
The year is 2575, and two rival mega-corporations are at war over a planet that’s little more than a speck at the edge of the universe. Now with enemy fire raining down on them, Kady and Ezra — who are barely even talking to each other—are forced to evacuate with a hostile warship in hot pursuit.
But their problems are just getting started. A plague has broken out and is mutating with terrifying results; the fleet’s AI may actually be their enemy; and nobody in charge will say what’s really going on. As Kady hacks into a web of data to find the truth, it’s clear the only person who can help her is the ex-boyfriend she swore she’d never speak to again.
Told through a fascinating dossier of hacked documents — including emails, maps, files, IMs, medical reports, interviews, and more — Illuminae is the first book in a heart-stopping trilogy about lives interrupted, the price of truth, and the courage of everyday heroes.
Thoughts ~
I absolutely loved this book! It was so so different than anything I've ever read before, and it kept me hooked from page 1! The storyline was already interesting enough--I mean come on, their entire planet gets ambushed and they have to leave on these huge spaceships and run away from the ambushers chasing them-- but there was also such lovable, down to earth (pun intended) characters that constantly made you laugh and cry for them. Not to mention the writing was top-tier and the format was so different and cool.
The whole book is made up of files in a dossier case. The files are in the form of security footage, radio transmissions, interviews, emails, webpages, and more. Hands down the coolest format I've ever seen. I've got to be honest, when I was reading at first, I was kind of lost and didn't really understand what was going on, but once you get into it, it becomes much more understandable and easy to read. This book is full of science talk and big words, but don't fret, you won't get lost or confused, everything will be explained and uncovered. Illuminae is full of twists, thrilling scenes, tons of humor, and adorable love.
Things I loved ~
-The dossier style format
-The science talk and how it makes me feel extra smart
-The amazing characters!! Kady, ❤EZRA MASON❤, JIMMY & BYRON!!!!, spooky AIDAN
-The romanceeeee, Kady and Ezra make my lil heart so happy, they are such sweeties to each other and love each other so much and I love it
-Ezra and his rose😍🌹❤ (he's really trying to make Kady--AND ME--swooooon)
-AIDAN and just how awesome of an addition he is to the story and how I don't know if I'm supposed to love him or absolutely hate him (it's both)
-"Am I not merciful?" AHHHHH
-Bonus! (kind of a spoiler) Fricken AIDEN having the biggest crush on Kady like no AIDAN that is Ezra's woman, you are a computer, go back to hacking and killing
Things I didn't love ~
-Nothing, I loved everything (5 stars for a reason, people)
-I may just be very biased lol but ahhh it's so good and I don't love how underrated it is😂
Characters ~
-Kady Grant
"I am frequently underestimated. I think it's because I'm short."
Kady is one of our main characters. She is 17, pretty short, with dyed pink hair and blue eyes. At the beginning of the book, she is just your average teenage girl who loves computer hacking and her boyfriend, but by the end of the book, she turns into such a badass, sarcastic, done with your crap kind of girl. Kady is the definition of flipping off the world. She really is the star of the book, and I love her so much.
-Ezra Mason
"He presses the trigger. And, like roses in his hands, death blooms."
Oh gosh, where to start? I am thoroughly in love with this man. He is just- ah so perfect! Ezra is the other main character in Illuminae. He is 17 (I think), very tall (6'5, I can't take it😍), has brown hair, and the sassiest attitude. He's such a sweetheart even though he's like a special soldier and stuff, but like come on, he can be a sweetie too. He really is a simp for Kady (you can't blame him, I'm a simp for her too) and I love it. Anyway, there's more to him than being hot, and throughout the book we see him become more confident with fighting and being the soldier he is, and we really get to see him be a badass too.
-AIDAN
"Am I not merciful?"
OMG, this thing is insane! I actually have no clue how I feel about AIDAN, if I love him or hate him. I think that's why he's such a cool character because he makes you question what you think. He is the definition of doing the wrong thing for the right reason (confusing, I know, but so accurate). So AIDAN is not a person, he is actually an artificial intelligence system. AIDAN stands for Artificial Intelligence Defense Analytics Network, and he is 1000 percent a morally grey character. He is the only character that you get his POV of, and it is soooo interesting to see inside this character's brain (actually, it's probably his memory card or something lol) and see what he thinks is right and wrong.
Quotes ~
"Perhaps bravery is simply the face humanity wraps around its collective madness."
"You have me, until the last star in the galaxy dies, you have me."
"There are no absolutes in life, save death."
“The universe was here before you, and it will go on after you. The only way it will remember you is if you do something worthy of remembrance.”
"Oh, poor baby. Did I hurt the mass-murdering psychopathic artificial intelligence's feelings?”
Do I Recommend? ~
Yesssss, I 1000000 percent recommend it for everyone. If you love super cool sci-fi, loads of humor, adorable romance, and crazy twists and turns, then you will love this series.
